Talking about Turkey

By Mira Guzel – 3MA

Turkey is my country and a place where there is so much to do and so many things to see.

I am here to tell you why you should go there.

Turkey is part in Asia and part in Europe making it the only country in the world which goes over two continents. It is next to Syria, Greece, Georgia, Armenia, Iraq and Iran.

Turkey is very beautiful with lots of things to see and do.

Turkey is very beautiful with lots of things to see and do.

In Turkey you will see lots of cool things and eat lots of nice food but one thing that is the best is the people.

If you go to anywhere that is not yours, Turkish people will make you feel like you are in your own house. They’re very nice and kind. If you tell them “I want to call my mum I’m lost, they will call your mum with their own phone” (but you have to know your mum’s number!). They are also very busy people and if you go to work there you will have lots to do.

One of our most famous people was Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who was born in 19 May 1881 and who was the man who united Turkey and who became the first president of the country, in 1923.

In Turkey when it’s winter it’s cold and it snows. The roads get blocked and the cars can’t move and huge trucks move the snow off the streets. It can get as cold as -40 degrees and it looks like everything is covered in white cotton candy. At summer it’s not hot as Egypt but it can be more than 30 degrees during the day.

Luckily, for tourists there are many things to do in Turkey. One of them is to see Pamukkale which means “cotton castle” in Turkish. You can also go to a Turkish restaurant and eat manti. Manti is like a Chinese dumpling which has yogurt and sauce on it.

You can also go to the Kiz Kulesi in Istanbul. There is a story to this castle.

Kiz Kulesi - "The Maiden's Tower".

Kiz Kulesi – “The Maiden’s Tower”.

One day a fortune-teller told the king that his daughter would die of a snake bite. The king locked his daughter in this castle so nothing could happen to her. But one day an evil person sent a basket of apples with a snake hidden in it! So the snake bit the princess and the princess died.

I like the beaches. I also like the food and the garden parks. The reason I like the parks is that they are filled with flowers and it’s open and green. There is Yesiltepe, Dilek park, Euromos, and Herakleia. The beaches have tan coloured sand and some of the beaches have dark blue water and others light. The sea sometimes looks the same colour as the sky. At some beaches there is only sand and mud with a bit of green but at others it is very green with big mountains.

When you are tired you can also watch the TV show Yalan Dunya which means “the lying world” and is a comedy show. Everyone watches this show that comes once a week on Monday.

Turkey is famous for many reasons. Did you know that St. Nicholas, also known as Santa Clause, was in Patara? Also, Istanbul is the only city in the world built on two continents and Noah’s Ark landed on Mount Ararat in Eastern Turkey.

Now for the food. Turkish food is also really nice.

There is doner, manti, lahmacun and more. My favorite is of course, manti. I like it because I like yogurt and the sauce on it. Hhhhhm! There is also a kind of bread callled simit which is round with a hole in the middle and is covered with sesame.

Before you go you should try to learn some Turkish words like hello which is “merhaba”, “please” which is “lutfen” and “thank you” which is “tesekkur ederim – ederiz -eder”.

You should also take your camera with you because there is a flower festival in Istanbul which is very beautiful.

Fortunately, I think that Turkey is not a dangerous country at all but you still have to watch out because yesterday I saw on the news a thief broke the lock and stole 10000 TL from a supermarket!

While Turkey has no official religion but most of the people are Muslim. But even if they’re Muslim they don’t really wear head scarves.
