For the Love of Money

In the CES Post’s first fiction entry, Sarah El-Ezaby (6JM) presents a short story of mystery, murder and greed.

Prologue

The house was empty except for the two of them, the tension in the room built up, and the wine sloshed in the chalice. His wife was sat on the opposite end of the table. A grim smile came across his wife’s face as he sipped it. The deathly taste of lemon sprawled across his tongue and he felt his throat close. Though he gasped for air none came into his lungs. Never had he imagined that dying would feel anything like this; where something as little as air held his future. He felt so hopeless, as he could do nothing to save himself. The chalice with a loud bang fell to the floor, as he took one last look at his wife who looked as if she’d sold her soul to the devil.

Introduction

The university campus was a good one, the best one in the province. It was quite far from my hometown, though. I always managed to stay in touch with my childhood friends from there however, including my dad.

Tick, Tick, Tick. It seemed like class would never end. I usually did enjoy the lectures, but today just I just wanted to go home. Tick. Tick. Tick. Ring! Ha, just as I was beginning to think that I would be stuck here forever. The corridors filled with other students walking busily from one lecture to another. I was just glad I was finished mine for the day.
